On Kuwait’s intertidal mudflats giant male mudskippers (some the length of a bottle of wine) display vigorously to attract females during the breeding season. In addition to erecting their impressive fins they also leap dramatically into the air to communicate to females at greater distances. Its’ near unpronounceable scientific name is Boleophthalmus dussumieri and these fish (known locally as Boshlambo) are as skittish as they are flamboyant. It took many hours of lying motionless in the mud to photograph these courtship rituals. I only abandoned my post when the tide marched in, quickly submerging my body’s outline imprinted into the mudflat.
