In Jan 2018 I had the privilege to photograph a unique albatross conservation mission to Te Tara Koi Koia, an imposing pyramid shaped rocky island at the southern edge of New Zealand’s remote Chatham Islands. Wary of the Chatham albatrosses’ reliance on a single breeding ground, the @chatham_taiko_trust are creating a second nesting colony on the main island. Young albatross chicks are relocated from Te Tara Koi Koia, placed on flowerpot nests among decoy adults, and fed fish until they fledge. If all goes as planned, the birds will return years later to lay the foundations for a new colony.
