I have been on the road or in the field almost continuously for nearly 20 years, first as a marine biologist and then as a photographer. For some of those years I was gone for 300 days and the act of getting from A to B via D and G, often with mountains of gear was frequently filled with more frustration than inspiration. However there were exceptions and at times the journey itself was as photographically fruitful as the destination. On the 5 day drive north from Cape Town to Namibia’s Skeleton Coast the road often passes in close proximity to some of the Namib desert’s iconic sand dunes. During a short detour to the west, in the direction of Sossusvlei the wind picked up dramatically, suspending sand and even small pebbles. On the canvas of a quickly disappearing road the wind-whipped, ever-shifting columns of sand reminded me of Peringuey's adders, a snake that uses distinctive sidewinding locomotion to traverse the dune fields of this, the world’s oldest desert.
