High up on Te Tara Koi Koia, a imposing pyramid shaped pinnacle offshore from New Zealand’s remote Chatham Islands, sits a large natural cave where endemic Chatham Albatrosses breed. Inside the cave, nests protected from wind and rain form unique pedestals, as tall as top hats. In modern times, more people have been into outer space than have set foot inside the most unique albatross nesting site in the world. I became one of those privileged few in Jan 2018 when, on assignment for @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine I documented this seabird holy grail. For a photographer more used to being underwater, the steep climb to the cave with heavy camera backpacks was sketchy and at times unsettling..... and I will take a testy great white shark or the mayhem of a shark studded sardine baitball any day over scaling a exposed rocky fortresses like this. Nonetheless, my 24 hours on Te Tara Koi Koia photographing its’ albatrosses became a real highlight of more than two decades exploring our wildest oceans and coasts. Thank you to the traditional owners for granting access and to the @chatham_taiko_trust (in particular Dave Bell) for getting me and @ottowhitehead up to and down from the cave in one piece. Please follow my friends at the @chatham_taiko_trust for more photos and adventures from the easternmost edge of the world.
