This vivid creature is a juvenile fringed leaf frog. Pictured here in bright pink, it will change colors; adults typically have a bold blue-green mottled coloration. The extensions of skin on their legs (called fringes) for which they get their name are thought to mimic lichen and thus help them look like flat bumps on a leaf when they are sleeping--a great way to avoid visual predators. This species can be found in the Amazonian lowlands in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. It remains in the high canopy of primary tropical lowland rainforest, only descending to lower branches for breeding. This frog was photographed from the private collection of Dev Lee, Folius.
