The rainbow scorpionfish belongs to a colorful – and poisonous – family, known for venomous spines along their back fin. Most species just cause a nasty sting in humans, but some members are deadly. This particular species is widely distributed in the Pacific – from central California south to Peru, and around oceanic islands along the way. It’s small – six inches max – and hides in crevices and cracks in rocks, walls and reefs. Smaller members of this species often stay near the protective spines of long-spined sea urchins. They are omnivorous, and mostly nocturnal hunters that ambush their prey. Because of their toxicity, they have few natural predators besides some larger fish, seals, and humans who like attractive, colorful fishes with interesting behaviors for the pet trade. Over the years, the @montereybayaquarium, where this species was photographed, has supported the establishment of marine protected areas off California and a
change in federal fisheries rules to put a priority of safeguarding the health of ecosystems that fish like these need to thrive. This has resulted in once-depleted populations of popular West Coast ground fish being staples once more on seafood menus, two decades after fishermen faced economic disaster.
