This is Mulana, a clever and intelligent five-month-old Tasmanian devil— much admired by keepers, staff, volunteers and visitors to her home at Healesville Sanctuary @zoosvictoria. These little animals have the strongest jaw strength-to-body- size ratio of any land animal, and are the largest carnivorous marsupials in the world today. When they feed, they eat entire carcasses – bones and all!
Sadly, this incredible species is endangered – they are threatened by Devil Facial Tumor Disease (DTFD), a type of cancer. This is one of the only forms of cancer that's contagious and is transmitted by biting during feeding and mating. The disease has spread across approximately 60% of Tasmania and caused a rapid decline in wild populations. The ‘Save the Tasmanian Devil’ program was established to investigate the disease through population monitoring, disease diagnostics and meta-population management. As part of this program, Healesville Sanctuary is one of eighteen zoos breeding Tasmanian devils. If the catastrophic decline of this species continues, these captive populations could become an essential source of animals for reintroduction to the wild. Healesville Sanctuary has bred 135 devils since they joined the program.
