Meet Buddy (left) and Peggy Sue, 2-year-old male and female Mechow’s mole rats. This species lives in small family groups and look like furry sweet potatoes with giant teeth. Though often considered an agricultural and horticultural pest due to their diet of roots and tubers, their physical adaptations are truly amazing. Their top and bottom incisors grow in front of their lips, allowing them to dig tunnels by chewing-- without getting soil or rock in their mouths! They can communicate in a variety of ways, even through creating air waves in their tunnels. Each element of their skin and fur has a purpose. Short, dense, and soft-- their fur helps them move backward and forward easily underground by repelling friction and warding off dirt. This species is native to the Zambezian region of Africa and was photographed at the @houstonzoo.
