This beautiful bird is a western meadowlark at the Milford Nature Center in Kansas. They seek
the wide open spaces of native grasslands and the edges of agricultural fields, where they build their nests on the ground. This nest, made of dried grasses and bark, is either open or has a partial or full grass roof, and sometimes a grass entry tunnel that is several feet long. Young leave the nest about 12 days after hatching, before they are able to fly, and are cared for by parents for at least another 2 weeks. The male sometimes has two mates at the same time, while females do all the incubating and most of the feeding of the young. The western meadowlark is known for its distinctive flute-like call and the male will even sing to defend nesting territory. The western meadowlark is the state bird of six states: Montana, Kansas, North Dakota, Oregon, Wyoming and my home state, Nebraska. •
