Bottoms up! A perfect example of Patrick #Caulfield’s sophisticated images of metropolitan life, this painting hung above the artist’s kitchen table for decades, where he’d look at it whilst eating, talking and sharing a bottle of #wine. The bottle represents conviviality and conversation, whilst allowing the artist to play complicated games in his characteristic #graphic style of #illustration, infused with ideas of #Cubism and #Purism. Originally painted in 1966, Caulfield reworked the painting in 1984, transforming what had originally been two bottles into a single red bottle with a black shadow. On view in #London all weekend, ahead of Tuesday’s Modern & Post-War British art auctions. ???
