A good meeting with Indian PM @narendramodi at the Istana today. PM Modi was last here in 2015, when we signed a Strategic Partnership. Since then, I have visited New Delhi twice. I was glad to return the warm hospitality that PM Modi extended to us during our visits.
India is a long-standing and cherished friend of Singapore. Our people-to-people ties go back centuries. Our ties in other areas – defence, economic, technology, smart cities and skills development – have also expanded over the last few years.
One new area of cooperation is fintech. India is a significant market for Singapore fintech companies, while Singapore – a fintech hub – can be a gateway for India to the Southeast Asian market. We agreed to establish a Joint Working Group on Fintech. We have also launched a link between our payment systems – NETS and India’s RuPay. Indian tourists can now use RuPay cards for e-payments at Changi Airport and selected shops.
