? For @justin_peck, the @nycballet resident choreographer, a new dance always begins with a fixation on a piece of music. He’ll listen to it over and over, sometimes for years. At 30, he has created 37 ballets that vary wildly, with scores from Copland and Stravinsky, M83 and #SufjanStevens (playing here). Sufjan, who has written scores for several of @justin_peck’s ballets, explained the choreographer's gift for giving music what he called “consciousness and mass.” “I often perceive music as linear, with a beginning, middle and end,” he wrote. “But Justin’s work often has a depth perception along the Z-axis that is nonlinear. It’s more like how you would describe ‘volume.’ It’s expansive.” #JustinPeck’s style is hyperathletic but it retains a roughness around its edges. His work combines traditional ballet technique with the spontaneity of the everyday: the revving of a lawn mower, the popping of toast from a toaster. And more and more, he’s been venturing beyond ballet: films, music videos, fashion and, most recently, @carouselbway, for which he received a Tony nomination.
