Red dholes like this one at @zoobudapest look like dogs because they are dogs, though wild. They’re about the size of a German shepherd but have the excellent jumping and running skills of a fox. They’re also surprisingly good swimmers and highly social pack hunters, communicating with one another through a variety of whistles. After they’ve taken down their prey, dholes will swallow large chunks of meat whole and return it to the rest of their pack.
As humans continue to encroach on the habitats of red dholes in Asia, competition for food and space often occurs. They are losing their habitats and many wild prey species have disappeared, causing a dip in dhole numbers and a rise in livestock predation. In retaliation, local farmers began poisoning these canids, bringing them to the brink of extinction in many areas. Now, red dholes are listed as Endangered and their populations continue to decline.
