When southern white-faced owls like this one at @HoustonZoo want to appear tougher, they fluff up their feathers and make themselves look as large as possible. But when they aren’t making their threat display you can see how tiny they really are. These little guys measure just 9 inches (23 cm) in height and weigh up to 9 ounces (275g). Like most owls, they’re completely nocturnal and hunt for large insects, spiders, scorpions and small birds or reptiles after night falls. These adorable creatures can be found in many parts of southern Africa and spend their days snoozing inside tree hollows or within dense foliage to protect themselves from larger predators.
