On this #EarthDay I’d like to highlight the effects that our plastic use has on so many beautiful animals, many of which dwell in or near the sea. The amount of plastic consumed each year (300 million tons) is almost impossible to fathom. Overuse of plastic is unsustainable and nothing short of torturous to the environment and the creatures we share the Earth with. Some of the species most affected by plastic are pictured here. Sea turtles often mistake plastic bags with one of their favorite foods, jellyfish. After they ingest it their digestive systems become blocked, rendering them unable to swallow food. Fish like this panther grouper and seabirds like this laysan albatross cannot differentiate small plastic bits in the ocean with the food they normally consume and then suffer as their bodies try to digest and expel it. Sadly, an estimated 98 percent of albatross studied have been found to have ingested some kind of plastic debris. Many fish that we as humans consume have eaten plastic and therefore transfer the debris to our bodies. Larger marine mammals like this pilot whale and California sea lion are often found dead after being entangled not only in nets and fishing lines, but also plastic bags, packing materials, and other larger plastic objects. The devastation caused by our plastic consumption affects every living organism that depends on the ocean to live, including us. The good news is, each and every one of us has the power to help curb this. The first step is to say no to plastic bags at the grocery store, plastic straws, single use water bottles and countless other plastic products. Recycle and reuse every item you can, and always leave nature the way you found it. Stay informed and vocal about legislation that affects the environment and support laws in favor of regulating plastic. Spread the word and stay vigilant so that our Earth can remain as pristine and vibrant as it’s meant to be. #HappyEarthDay #EarthDay2018 #SayNoToPlastic #EndPlasticPollution #PhotoArk #SaveTogether
