Idea lynceus, or the giant tree nymph butterfly, is native to the rainforests of Malaysia and is one of the largest species of butterfly within the Danaidae group, reaching a wingspan of up to 6 inches (160 mm). Along with their size, their slow and graceful flight never fail to capture one’s heart when observed. The species is beautiful throughout the entire metamorphosis cycle from egg to larva to pupa right through the adult butterfly stage.
Giant tree nymphs are currently protected by the Malaysian Wildlife Conservation Act of 2010. At the moment, the Melaka Butterfly & Reptile Sanctuary is actively breeding Idea lynceus as well as a small number of Idea stolli within the laboratory. At the Sanctuary, both natural mating and hand pairing are used to breed the species, though hand paring is only utilised when the adult numbers are dwindling and intervention is necessary. They are currently the only institution in the world mass breeding giant tree nymphs.
