Black fin moray eels like this one at @gulfspecimen tend to hide in rock crevices, mouth agape, waiting for an unwary crab or shrimp to pass by. Its eyesight is poor, but its sense of smell is excellent. It tastes the water through two tubes that protrude from its nostrils and then strikes with lightning speed. It engulfs its prey, biting with its razor-sharp, inwardly-curved teeth. If it's lean pickings, they leave their burrows and hunt the open seagrass meadows and sand bottoms.
These eels are feared by many-- even sharks avoid them. Commercial fishermen are wise to shake them out of their nets before reeling them in. Come in contact with one and they’ll wrap around your hand in a split second and inflict a savage bloody bite with their fangs, which are coated with a bacteria that is both an anticoagulant and an inflictor of excruciating pain.
