Sitatunga are built for semi-aquatic lifestyles. They dwell near swamps in central Africa and spend their mornings and evenings feeding on foliage and aquatic grasses, oftentimes waist deep in swamp water. Males like this one at @Zoo_Aquarium_Madrid are considerably larger than females and have distinctive backward-bending spiral horns that are used not only to fight with other males over food, but also to navigate through the dense vegetation of their swampy habitats. Their water-repellent coats and long, banana-shaped hooves also offer assistance while maneuvering through the mud and water. If they feel threatened, sitatunga dip completely below the water and swim to safety with just their nostrils above the surface.
