Nile softshell turtles like this one at @TheOmahaZoo are known to be intelligent, curious and playful. Their extremely smooth carapaces, which help them move through the water with grace, and their elongated nostrils that protrude beyond the surface of the water as they remain submerged, are adaptations that have allowed these creatures to thrive in their aquatic environments for so long.
Sadly, Nile softshell turtles are currently listed as Vulnerable by IUCN. In Egypt and other parts of Africa, they are killed for their meat when they come on land to lay their eggs. They also drown after being accidentally caught in the nets of fishermen.
Thankfully there are breeding programs in place today that will help keep this species alive. This Nile softshell turtle pictured was the first one ever born at a zoo using managed breeding efforts. It weighed just 16 ounces when it was born on June 29th 2009. The parents and this baby (not really a baby anymore) can be seen in the Congo section of @TheOmahaZoo’s Lied Jungle.
