The blue-faced honeyeater is a resident of Australia and Southern New Guinea. In human care they have been known to live until their late 20s! This one was photographed at @HoustonZoo. Juvenile blue-faced honeyeaters leave the nest with yellowish green facial skin, which over time turns blue. This species is known for its intelligence and although its currently listed as “Least Concern” by IUCN, it is related to one of the rarest birds in Australia-- the Critically Endangered regent honeyeater (swipe to see). The regent honeyeater is also included in the Photo Ark and is a species that has been saved from extinction by the captive breeding and release efforts by @zoosvictoria and partners.
