Rowley’s palm pit vipers live in montane cloud forests in southern Mexico at elevations up to 5,500 feet. Occasionally, they turn up on coffee plantations, but they are incredibly rare and often not seen. These snakes are very shy and spend most of their time high up in pine and oak trees, waiting for food to ambush and staying out of sight of humans. Like all pit vipers, they have heat-sensing pits on the front of their faces used to find food and adequate basking spots to thermoregulate.
Rowley’s palm pit vipers are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. While their habitats were difficult to get to in the past, humans have now accessed them and they are quickly disappearing due to logging and agriculture. Mexican law protects these snakes, but they are highly sought after by illegal snake collectors. The @STLZoo is working with other institutions in the United States to keep genetics as varied as possible and breed them in captivity in order to maintain the species. They are fantastic animals with beautiful coloration that appeal even to people who are usually afraid of snakes, making them wonderful ambassadors for many of their fellow reptiles.
