Senegal doves like this one at @LincolnChildrensZoo are usually seen in pairs or groups throughout tropical Africa and parts of the Arabian Peninsula. To attract a mate, males of this species will follow a female while bobbing his head and softly cooing. If she gives him any attention he will wait and begin “displacement-preening” where he will groom himself for no reason, which is equivalent to us humans scratching our heads or pacing when we don’t know what else to do. When the female accepts the male’s avances, she will crouch and beg for food to let the male know she is ready to mate.
After they become bonded, these doves are very cooperative parents, working together to build their nest and then taking turns incubating and feeding their young. To protect their babies, many adults will bravely fake injuries in front of predators in order to lure them away from their nests.
