This beautiful and intricate creature is a springbok praying mantis, photographed at @aucklandzoo.
Many New Zealanders may not know that the praying mantis they spy in their backyards are not endemic to this country, but to South Africa! They were introduced to New Zealand in the 1970’s. Many people know the story of the praying mantis female cannibalising the male after mating, but while the springbok mantis female does this, the New Zealand mantis female does not.
Through their current exhibition Bug Lab, @AucklandZoo has been busy communicating the virtues of insects as creatures to be celebrated and not reviled. They are integral to the functioning of our natural world, a largely untapped resource for scientific research into flight and mechanics, and also as a viable option for healthy eating. Insects are projected to become the sustainable food wave of the future and the Zoo actually stocks New Zealand company @crawlers like oven-roasted, protein-packed ants, salted caramel scorpions, and award-winning Otago locusts!
