Have you ever looked directly inside a hippo’s mouth? Though it’s an incredible sight, we don’t recommend getting anywhere close to jaws as powerful as these. With one bite, hippos are capable of putting down a force of 2,000 pounds per square inch. Because these animals are vegetarians, their ever-growing canines aren’t used to eat, but instead to fight for their territory and to intimidate big cats who make the mistake of hunting them. Along with their jaws, hippos also have very strong legs, allowing them push off of the ground and propel through the water, where they like to be the majority of the time in order to avoid dehydration from the African heat. They can be submerged for up to 30 minutes and babies are even able to suckle underwater by closing their ears and noses.
This beautiful hippo named Uma was photographed at the @SanAntonioZoo.
