Frosted flatwoods salamanders are a beautiful species endemic to the Longleaf Pine ecosystem. These federally threatened salamanders have suffered a 90% loss of population since 2000, and are now at imminent risk of extinction. The @AmphibianFoundation in Atlanta, GA, holds the only captive breeding group on the planet and is working to conserve this species.
Once common throughout the southeastern US coastal plain, there are just two populations left in Florida’s panhandle and they're found in only one remaining wetland in Georgia. Working with state, federal and academic partners, the Foundation’s goal is to produce healthy offspring for release into restored and protected habitat in their native range. Without human intervention, this species will likely be extinct in the next 5-10 years.
