Saheed Vassell was as ubiquitous as the street signs in his neighborhood — Crown Heights, Brooklyn. People knew they were on Utica Avenue if they saw him. He’d walk up and down the 6-block stretch between Eastern Parkway and Empire Boulevard, reciting Scripture to himself. On a daily basis, he helped people with their groceries. He helped elderly people descend subway steps. And most afternoons, he would sweep up the hair at Kev’s Unique Barber Shop. His family said the 34-year-old began to lose his mind about a decade ago, after a @nypd officer shot and killed his good friend. On Wednesday, Saheed met the same fate. To his family and friends, he was a mentally ill man. To police officers who responded to 911 calls, he appeared to be a dangerous man with a gun. Saheed’s death is now part of a roster of fatal police shootings of mentally ill people, most of them black or Hispanic. His parents said that until his death, they had no idea how great an impact their son had on the neighborhood. “I will not sit here and tell you who my son was,” said his father, Eric Vassell. “I did not know even who he was. There’s a story. His story ——” “—— is on the street,” Saheed’s mother, Lorna, interjected. @demetrius.freeman photographed @Lorna in her son’s bedroom. Visit the link in our profile to read more.
