?LaTasha Barnes strode into the dancers’ circle, lithe and grinning and more than a little nervous, waiting to be given a theme. Members of the crowd shouted terms; they settled on “freedom” and “Wonder Woman.” Behind her, the musicians noodled with interpretations. Soon came an irresistible rhythm inspired by afrobeat, rooted in house and punctuated by stabs of keyboard that doubled as percussion. LaTasha (@tasha_b_va) beamed and pointed at Jessie Davis (@djnebraska), the keyboardist. She was ready to enact “freedom.” The 2 were featured artists at @LayeRhythm, an occasional party where random ideas turn into music and movement. The event focuses on freestyle dancing — impromptu, unchoreographed movements driven by the spirit of the music. “It felt empowering when she started playing,” @tasha_b_va said of how @djnebraska’s propulsive riffs helped her explore the theme. “I just wanted to find that sense of freedom, that powerful woman inside that I want to honor every day anyway.” @sashafoto made this video of LaTasha in action.
