Riding the subway in New York City can feel like an epic journey. Is your express train making all local stops? Are you being held in the station because of an earlier incident? What time is it? (Besides showtime.) ? To capture this scene — and many others — the photographer @rdegive concentrated on the views from the first and last cars on elevated trains, where the sensation was like “floating through the city,” he said. “It’s a nice way to consider the passing of time in different neighborhoods. You see how long the buildings have been there, and how long the subway has been there.” He rode during the quiet hours, when the train became not just a mode of transit but a place in itself — an illuminated stage where New Yorkers can act out their visions of themselves. One #subway performance in particular caught his eye, he said. A man in the first car of a No. 7 train was staring out the front window. “He was doing what I do,” @rdegive said. “So I put down my camera and I just watched him.” ?
