Thousands of people gathered in the streets in #Memphis today to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. More than just recollecting or celebrating his life, though, many of those who converged on the city where Dr. King was fatally shot are hoping to channel his spirit as they work to make progress on his signature issues: racial harmony and economic justice. A rally organized by labor unions drew a crowd carrying signs with messages like “Fight Poverty” and “We got nothing to lose but our chains.” And a banner hanging high above a stage read #IAm2018 — a nod to the “I Am a Man” slogan that Memphis sanitation workers used when they were striking in 1968, a cause that prompted Dr. King to travel to Memphis 50 years ago. Many activists expressed concern that Dr. King’s legacy might be sanitized as someone who simply advocated peace. They said they hoped that this moment would provide a chance to highlight the forceful lengths to which he was willing to go — like resistance through civil disobedience — to overcome racism. @tamirhasacellphone took this photo today in #Memphis.
