One man vanished diving at midnight. Another was attacked by a great white shark. 2 more drowned, one in borrowed scuba gear he wasn’t qualified to use. All 4 men were casualties of an entrenched illicit trade: poaching #abalone, a seafood delicacy that sells for enormous prices in Asia. For more than 2,000 years, abalone has been served to celebrate special occasions and honor guests. It has a rich, buttery flavor, and, when prepared correctly, the flesh is tender, though it can be rubbery and tough. But although abalone once smothered reefs in #SouthAfrica, it has become more difficult to find as a result of overfishing, luring untrained divers into deeper and more deadly waters. @tasneemalsultan took this photo of a poacher wearing a tattered wet suit holding an #abalone in the cold water off Cape Town. Despite the risk of violent death, poaching has become an important source of revenue for some. “Before, when we were working on the farms here, we were hungry,” said one diver from a community about 100 miles east of Cape Town.
