“Memphis is a city that wears its ache,” writes our reporter @alanblinder, who was born there, along with Jerry Gray, an editor for @ニューヨーク・タイムズ who used to cover the city for the Associated Press. At the motel where the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was slain, a world-class museum has been erected in honor of his work and the civil rights struggle. And across town, at @uofmemphis, an original copy of Dr. King’s 1965 “We Shall Overcome” speech is on loan from a local philanthropist. In concrete ways, and in far more subtle ones, #Memphis is inexorably tied to Dr. King. More than any other city, it’s perceived as a place to measure the progress of his legacy and dreams. But in the half-century since he was assassinated there, the city has been immersed in poverty, segregation and violence. @mirandabarnes took this photo of the balcony where #MartinLutherKingJr was assassinated on this day 50 years ago. Visit the link in our profile to read about Memphis, a place described by its mayor as “a city whose originality and soul has changed the world.”
