For Heather Hardy, entering the ring marks the end of one battle and the beginning of another — one that can feel simpler than life’s day-to-day struggles. People often ask her: Doesn’t it hurt to fight? “It hurt to have my 8-pound daughter,” Heather said with a laugh. “Nobody asks about that.” For as long as Heather — or @heathertheheat — has been a fighter, she’s also been a single mother, raising her daughter with help from her sister, Kaitlyn. Heather competed in boxing and American-style kickboxing before #mixedmartialarts. Before her first fight, every step toward the ring brought another self-doubting thought: “Why didn’t I go to cooking school?” But her experience in #boxing provided her with some comfort. And now, her success in mixed martial arts has inspired others — including some of the women whose stories we shared earlier today. @jessierocks photographed all of them while on assignment for @nytimesfashion.
