? Dance gatherings are hardly uncommon in NYC. And musicians jam together frequently. But no other event bridges the 2 groups with crowd participation in the way @LayeRhythm does. The event focuses on freestyle dancing — impromptu, unchoreographed movements driven by the spirit of the music — and is a forum for street styles like B-boying, house, waacking and flexing. In one highlight, known as the Cupid session, 2 musicians are randomly chosen to improvise a duet and 2 dancers are picked to conjure a love story. Here, @sashafoto captured Gabriel “Emphasis” Alvarez and Kamilla “Lil’K” Karpalovaite improvising. “It’s like getting to know someone without talking,” said Gabriel, who’s 28. “You just have to trust that your partner will receive what you’re gonna give.” The 2 had recently met by chance.
