Follow the @OutofEdenWalk, Paul Salopek’s 12 year walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, a long term project I have been working on with Paul and National Geographic for nearly five years.

Late evening, a Lada in passing, factory spewing smoke, the theater of Shetpe, Kazakhstan.

In exhaustion, we had been driving for hours through the Mangystau region of western Kazakhstan searching for a hotel. Too far from anywhere, our only option offered was a random hotel in an equally random town called Shetpe. That night, we moved mattresses on the floor, remodeling the room of discomfort into comfort. Needed to use the bathroom downstairs, a scarce window welcomed a view to one of my favorite cars passing a rare tree, some strange factory belching smoke. The Lada making this somewhat unpleasant hotel, much more pleasant.

This moment upon a street nearing 2am had nothing to do whatsoever with the story I was working on last year in May for National Geographic. Feels pleasant publishing the Lada to here, while the main narrative for part VI of the @outofedenwalk is in this months issue of @ナショナルジオグラフィック, The New Silk Road, our overland journey through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
