Follow the @OutofEdenWalk, Paul Salopek’s 12 year journey walking in the footsteps of our ancestors, a long term project I have been working on with Paul and National Geographic for nearly five years.

The Registan at dusk, the square in the heart of the ancient Silk Road hub of Samarqand, now a World Heritage site in Uzbekistan. The name, Registan, means sandy place or desert in Persian.

Personal Notes: That evening in Samarkand was one I recall dreading...what to do when photographing one of the worlds most historic, well photographed landmarks? Wait. Photography is the acceptance of patience, the pain of never knowing what will be, which is also the beauty. Expecting nothing, I wrestled with the notion of what to do. Under a dimming sky that sustained momentarily, unexpectedly, thankfulness came through the theater of life, in simplicity, actors upon a stage before centuries of history. They naturally appeared, marked their presence, then moved on, never to be seen upon this amphitheater of vastness exactly the same again.
