The most beautiful writing and journey, @OutofEdenWalk, Paul Salopek’s 12 year walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, a long term project I have been working on with Paul and National Geographic for nearly five years. - Sroch Kamolov, 84, eating Samarkand's most famous dish, palov, at a small restaurant in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. - My good friend, @aziz_khalmuradov kept telling me, “John, you’re not going to know Uzbekistan until you have palov”. Weeks had passed and I hadn’t tried the Uzbek delicacy of rice (also known as osh). A type of pilaf, palov often consists of beef, grated carrots, onions and rice, fried in large wok style pans above flame throwing heat. Earlier that April morning, I was with Yulia Grigoryants trying to make something meaningful from the main market in Samarkand. Spending hours photographing melting snow dripping off a roof next to fruit sellers, Yulia in kind patients equally supporting my often crazy notion that something can be created, from nothing. Wet, delighted, although no real meaningful images but a lovely IG video story...there is always, something...we walked to the hotel along a quiet back street with Aziz. At an opened door there was a kind old man seated at a table in a nondescript tiny restaurant, waiting to eat. For some reason no longer remembered, I walked in, was welcomed by the elder with a teeth missing smile and asked to sit down. It just so happened they served only one dish...palov. Aziz said “This isn’t the best palov, and it’s a dirty place!” With all my dearest love to Aziz, hearing ‘dirty place’ meant we were at the right place, sitting across from the kind old man who was so welcoming, my shoes and pants still wet, tasting the best of best palov, ever. - My latest story in @NatGeo, in this months issue, The New Silk Road, our overland journey through Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan photographed throughout 2016 and early 2017.
