Follow the @OutofEdenWalk, Paul Salopek’s 12 year walk in the footsteps of our ancestors, a long term project I have been working on with Paul and National Geographic for nearly five years.

Using homemade skis attached to a piece of wood, children sled along a frozen river on the outskirts of Moynak, Uzbekistan.

Remembering this late winter spent last February with these five boys, sliding their afternoon in joyful circles along a frozen river close to the retreated Aral Sea near Moynak. Other than my disadvantage of being on foot, repeatedly slipping like a penguin, I had as much excitement as they had, then cracking through pockets of gently melting ice, the children giggling at my ankle wet predicament. Me in equal laughter how I had chosen the wrong shoes, that a 70kg fellow should have known better to walk along its banks, instead of thinking he could walk on ice that was returning to water.
