Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan in threat posture – It amazes me sometimes how out-of-the-blue some of my favourite images have come to be. Usually when photographing the mute swans at dawn I would always arrive at least 30 minutes before the sun starts to emerge over the horizon. This is because on the cool, crisp, windless mornings the lake is usually shrouded by an ethereal mist whilst the cool, blue hues of the pre-dawn light can make for some beautifully evocative images. Of course light levels at this point are pretty low and so my default ISO to start on is ISO 6400 as this is the only way that I can maintain a useable shutter speed. At this time of the morning the birds are just waking up and the mood is calm so a minimum shutter speed in the region of 1/250sec or 1/3230sec is plenty enough to freeze the slow moving action, or to negate the possibility of any lens camera shake. As both light and activity levels start to lift however I like to shoot at least 1/500sec as this way if a coot or swan suddenly decides to take flight or engage in a territorial pursuit then I have enough speed to capture and freeze the action. On this morning however I arrived late and the sunlight was already on the lake. No sooner had I got my tripod set up than this adult male started surging across the lake, tail feathers erect in a display of dominance. I could see the pools of light toward which he was likely heading and so I took a rough exposure of the sunlit pool of light, say 1/500sec at F4 and then I adjusted this in my mind to compensate for the brightness of the sunlit swan. I quickly dialled in 1/1000sec at F4 as the swan requires much less exposure and this sequence was captured within about the first minute of me sitting down. Though I’ve sat at that lake hundreds of times with the swans this serendipitous capture remains one of my favourite images, simply because of the beautiful swan gliding through a tiny pool of dappled sunlight.
