Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Great crested grebe in dawn mist – Being familiar with, and then adjusting for, the frailties or weaknesses in your own camera/lens equipment can be of significant benefit when it comes to trying to produce the very best work that you can. Whilst I am fortunate to be able to use some of the best cameras it soon becomes apparent to me in which situations they are reliable and in which they have flaws. One of these is with the focussing points, the Nikon camera which I currently use have about 51 (though I could be corrected on this one!), and the performance and tenaciousness of these focussing points can vary significantly. One of the most challenging environments in which to work is in mist as the poor visibility and low contrast lighting makes it extremely difficult for the camera to know exactly on what that you’d like to focus. If this subject moves, even slowly and predictably, the focus reliability can decrease even further and this is something that I have learnt to my cost. It is a generally accepted rule that the central focussing point is always the fastest and most reliable and so in situations such as these I will always compromise compositional perfection for accurate and sharp focussing. Even so, I still had to wait for the grebe to emerge out of the mist, and into the sunlight, before I was able to lock onto it accurately. In terms of exposure the changeable light, the grebe emerging from subdued gloom into relatively bright sunlight, meant that I had to stick with aperture priority and simply guesstimate in terms of how much light and dark was in the image as to how much compensation to either add or subtract. As it turns out I actually quite like the central positioning of the bird and the dawn lighting combined with the thick mist makes it one of my favourtite grebe images.
