Endangered Jamaican Blackbird feeding in Bromeliad // Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @ナショナルジオグラフィック – I have just completed a ten-day mission in Jamaica, trying to photograph some of that island's rare and unique birds. On the top of my target list was this little fellow: the endangered Jamaican Blackbird. No, it doesn't have the brilliant colors or musical songs that we typically associate with tropical birds, and few Jamaicans have ever seen one. The fact is, I would never have found one on my own, but had the good fortunate to work with the extraordinary Ricardo Miller at @arrowhead_birding , one of the top bird guides in Jamaica. Together we spent a week trying to locate blackbirds in the montane forests of the Blue Mountains. It was challenging work, dealing with rain, fog and the darkness of the forest interior trying to capture a often hyperactive bird. In this portrait, I was lucky enough to capture a Blackbird poised at the edge of a bromeliad plant, one of their main sources of food; the rich colors of the plants made a handsome background for the glossy black bird. #wildlifejamaica #blueandjohncrowmountains #ilovenhmj #endangeredspecies #birdsofinstagram #birdlifejamaica
