A couple days ago, I went for an afternoon hike as the light faded, and found a herd of mule deer grazing in the snow. This beautiful buck was keeping a vigilant eye out for any danger on a high spot near a Ponderosa pine. As a light snow fell, he appeared like a magical creature, the sacred deer, a woodland diety, embodying the peace, wildness and sense of expectation of the winter night. It was beautiful to spend time with these beautiful, peaceful creatures on this shortest day of the year, connecting with the season and its rhythms. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Feliz Navidad to all and may you spend these days with friends, family and connecting with the wild places that give us solace, inspiration and hope in dark days!
