Former Head Office of Gekkeikan

This is the former head office of Gekkeikan, originally built in 1919. It still retains its original appearance, and served as the company’s head office right up until the establishment of the new head office building in August 1993. The building is surrounded by a low “inu-yarai” fence, designed to protect the base of the walls from dogs (inu) or other damage. To protect the building from damage by flooding from the Uji River, which used to be a frequent occurrence, the front entrance features stone steps and a stone base, raising the floor about a meter above the road. Its ceilings are higher than an Edo-period building, and while it is still Japanese in style, it incorporates a number of Western construction methods throughout.
