The history of maneki boards dates back to the Edo period. The first ones were made in 1779 by the calligrapher Okazakiya Kanroku as advertisements for the Nakamura-za Theater in Edo. Kanroku’s pen name was Kantei, hence the name of the calligraphy style kantei.
