In the 16th century, canals were dug through the castle town of Fushimi. This photo from 1909 shows Gekkeikan’s sake breweries clustered along the Horikawa, literally “Moat River”, a legacy of that era. Rice barrels were transported on the boats we can see on the river.
The sake brewery nearest to the camera is the Nishigura Brewery, which was added onto the west side of the Okura Residence. It later served as the head office of Gekkeikan, a role it played until 1993. Beyond it, we can see three white-walled gabled breweries in a row. These formed the Minamigura Brewery, today the Uchigura Brewery, and the bottling plant, now the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum. These breweries look almost unchanged from how they did back when this photo was taken, and create a landscape widely loved as a symbol of the sake town of Fushimi.
