In December 1967, Horst Faas, the chief photographer of The Associated Press in #Vietnam, was pinned down in a slim trench among the rubber trees lining the American air base at Bu Dop, just a few miles from the Cambodian border. It was less than 2 months before the launch of the Tet offensive and the area was teeming with Viet Cong activity. It was a situation all too familiar to Faas. Earlier that year, he’d been caught in a firefight closer to Saigon. Like the soldiers around him, he was trapped; unlike them, he was armed not with a rifle but a camera. #HorstFass was one of the greatest war photographers of his generation, a 2-time Pulitzer winner known for capturing precise moments of high emotion and danger on the battlefield. This summer, the @ニューヨーク・タイムズ contract photographer @mjrhill traveled to #Vietnam to retrace some of Horst’s journeys during the war and afterward. Here, @mjrhill visited the former airbase where Horst was wounded half a century ago. Visit the link in our profile to read more in #NYTOpinion.
