An ideal scenario: a rocking chair under light-dappled palm trees, seen here uniting two icons of Modern #art, Jean Dubuffet and Francois-Xavier Lalanne. #Dubuffet's rare early work 'Palmiers aux Bedouins' was painted in 1948 while on a trip to the edge of the Sahara, a welcome escape for the artist from the city that also offered an alternative to the visual traditions of the West. "We came back from there absolutely cleansed of all the intoxications, truly refreshed and renewed, as well as enriched in the ways of savour-vivre," the artist commented on his stay with the Bedouins. Lalanne too was drawn to the Middle East for inspiration, fascinated by #Egyptian statuary, in particular the animal gods that dominated classical iconography. In his 'Oiseau d'Argent' rocking chair he was able to capture the movement of his bird form in the motion of the chair.
