Voluptuous beasts, sneering teeth, puritan bowties and ogling ? clash, churn and collide in George Condo’s whimsical ‘Compression IV’. Following a nine-month stint as a diamond-duster in Andy Warhol’s Factory, and encouraged by Jean-Michel Basquiat, George Condo began his artistic career in the 1980s, experimenting with a form of figurative painting that combined the representational with the abstract. By the time that this work was painted in 2011, Condo was at the height of his career, blurring the traditional lines between drawing and painting, finished and unfinished, balanced and unbalanced.
