Francis Bacon’s ‘Three Studies of George Dyer’ makes its first public appearance in over 50 years ahead of our 16 November Contemporary Art Evening Sale in #NewYork. According to popular #myth, Bacon first encountered Dyer when he caught him breaking into his home one night in 1963. From that moment on, Dyer featured large both in Bacon's life and art, as the pair embarked on a turbulent relationship. In the autumn of 1971, Dyer and Bacon travelled to #Paris for what was the pinnacle of artist’s career - his famed retrospective at the Grand Palais. However, barely 36 hours before the opening, Dyer was found dead from an overdose of sleeping pills, in the hotel suite the pair shared. This rare #triptych shows the artist at the height of his power – one of the most profoundly personal and intense portraits of the 20th century. #SothebysContemporary #FrancisBacon
