Today in #London, the sale of Howard Hodgkin’s personal collection was driven by participants from a global spread of 34 countries and soared to £5.2 million, featuring 11 works fetching a combined total of £366,000 to benefit charities supported by the artist in his lifetime. Records were set for an early painting by #Hodgkin, as well as for an original work on paper by the artist, in addition to record prices for his artist friend #BhupenKhakhar. As well as friendships, a further theme that ran through the works in the sale was the artist’s #love of depictions of #elephants, an animal he seems to have prized as highly as the #Mughal court did. Today many of these works depicting elephants leaped above their estimates, including this exquisite Miniature Painting showing two powerful elephants locked in combat, their handlers scattering as a single mahout attempts to control one, all witnessed by Rao Raja Bishan Singh (ruler of the state of Bundi from 1904-1821) looking on. Dating to late 18th century North India, #Rajasthan, Bundi, it sold for £16,250, nearly doubling its high estimate.
