Marawi and the surrounding area was once home to 200,000 people, making it the biggest Muslim-majority city in the Philippines. It’s now an emptied-out field of wreckage, contested by a dwindling group of Islamist militants who claim loyalty to ISIS, and by the government of President Rodrigo Duterte, who has vowed to root them out no matter the cost. That cost has been grim. The army says at least 133 troops, 617 militants and 45 civilians have been killed in the hostilities. And according to the #RedCross, 300,000 people from the city and surrounding area have fled the fight, many taking up residence in camps just 6 miles away. Cramped inside hot tents, most people here desperately want to return home. Instead, they’re coming to grips with the fact that they’re stuck. Camalia Baunto, pictured here in this photo by @jeszmann, fled Marawi early in the battle. Her husband, Nixon, 41, was trapped in the ruined city. She and their 6 children lost contact with him, apparently after his phone died. When soldiers finally got to the family’s house, they said it was empty. “It’s so painful because the military could have rescued him earlier,” Camalia said, sobbing. “We voted for the president! Please, please, help us bring out my husband alive. We are just ordinary people.” Visit the link in our profile to read more about the battle against ISIS that’s raging in the Philippines.
